At Broadway Family Practice we believe that mental health is just as important as physical health. This September, we join individuals, families, and organizations across the country in observing Suicide Prevention Month a time to raise awareness, encourage open conversations, and promote resources that can help save lives.
Why Suicide Prevention Month Matters
Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States, affecting people of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life. According to the CDC, over 49,000 people died by suicide in 2022 alone. That's one person every 11 minutes. Suicide is preventable and by increasing awareness, reducing stigma, and offering compassionate support, we can make a difference.
What You Can Do to Help
Whether you're a patient, caregiver, friend, or family member, you can play a vital role in suicide prevention. Here are some ways to start:
1. Start the Conversation
Don't be afraid to ask someone how they're really doing. A simple question like "I've noticed you've been quiet lately do you want to talk?" can open the door to life-saving conversations.
2. Listen Without Judgment
Sometimes, what somoene needs most is to be heard. Listen actively, validate their feelings, and avoid offering quick fixes or judgement.
3. Know the Warning Signs
Be aware of common warning signs of suicide, including:
- Talking about feeling hopeless or being a burden
- Withdrawing from friends and activites
- Dramatic modd changes
- Giving away possessions or saying goodbye
If you recognize these signs in someone you care about, don't ignore them. Reach out.
4. Connect with Help
